Think Carrot
From TermiSoc: A WikiHistory
Termisoc's successful marketing campaign for Freshers Faire 1994 had posters, free givaways (carrots) and a leaflet:

THE TERMINAL SOCIETY
Up to now termisoc hasn't been very good. The society has done little but run a rather dull electronic Bulletin Board System (BBS) that no-one used. However, during last year a major revolution took place. The old exec were swept aside (a tricky manoevre involving a fork lift truck, a gallon of vaseling, a packet of M&Ms and a 9 volt battery), and the nasty BBS was quickly deleted. Leaving us with err.. nothing.
BUT! We have now aquired a new and improved BBS complete with bells and whistles, which has been cristened 'Flux BBS'. We also have a programmer hard at work writing a fully-featured Talker for us. Both these systems will be connected to the Internet and JANET networks, allowing you to communicate with friends in other universities, as well as all sorts of people from all round the world.
For the future, we are negotiating the purchase of a computer server, so we will soon have more space for our various projects and stuff. We're also planning to start selling disks cheaper than computer services (Easy) as well as putting together a googolplex of social activities.

How to get on Flux BBS
1) Find a computer - the first floor of the Babbage building is
a good bet, but you could also try the library or Smeaton.
2) Get a pad prompt - look for 'Other computer systems' or
'Connect to other services' options.
3) Connect to Zeus, where Flux is based. Type this:
call plym.sc.zeus
4) Type 'flux". If you are then prompted for a password type
'fluxbbs'
5) Follow the on-screen instructions!
Glossary of terms
BBS - Bulletin Board System, where people call in, join 'message
areas' on various subjects, and read and enter messages to their
hearts content.
Internet - The main computer network, that one that everyone's talking
about. Often called by the cheesy names 'Information Superhighway'
and 'Cyberspace'. Anyway, as any technogeeg will tell you, the
internet is a huge, and fast growing global network of computer
servers.
JANET - Joint Academic NETwork. Like the internet, but less. This is
the UK university network, and isn't all that much fun. Used mainly for
connecting to the internet.
M&Ms - Mmm chiklit.
Talker - Some call them 'virtual spaces'. We call them 'people vegging
out by typing to each other across computer systems.'
Termisoc - Not just any dull student society - we sure know how to
have fun. We devise ways of exploding pigeons. We go to the
superbowl and laser tag. We hold great stomping parties. We watch
our grants go up in 'smoke'.
Vaseline - What you put on beached whales.

Taking care of your Carrot
1) Avoid exposing to direct sunlight/hardcore
pornography.
2) Sing to it.
3) Carrots are sensitive - do not pull scary faces at it.
4) The usual place to keep a carrot is in a fridge, but a
fruit bowl with often suffice.
5) Eat it.
REMEMBER: Carrots are cheap this time of year.

Termisoc Exec Committee
President: Case
Treasurer: Veeg
Secretary: Nemo
Technical Officer: Reef
Letcher: Vaughan
On the back of this mammoth success (over 30 members by the end of the evening) the Society was set for the year. Notable joinees included Alex 'BTF' Allmont, Ashley 'Arp' Pomeroy and some other people. The Exec. attended it's first Budget Review and convinced the Union to part with sufficient cash to buy a machine of its own. Within months, Termisoc's first machine, Area51 was born on the kitchen table at Garrick 'Heathcliffe' Twinney's home. Area 51 was a massive 486DX50 with 8MB of memory, it was a powerful machine with A51 on it's lcd speed indicator. Through a strange quirk of fate, the society was never billed for the components, a fact that to this day has never been explained.
