Free Games To Play

It helps if you have some legal games prepared beforehand that you can hand people a disc full off when they arrive as it massively speeds up time to get playing. Not everyone is going to have a top end machine, so it helps to have games that will run on middle and low end hardware. Most of these games, especially the Q3 engine based ones will run on damn near anything, but can also turn the graphics up pretty high for people who can. Its also handy to have a variety of games so you don't end up playing the same FPS and the same maps for 10 hours straight. And be sure and have one person whose job it is to vaguely organise the games and admin the server.

FPS

Urban Terror

Q3 mod with a standalone version. Its pretty much counterstrike but with much better graphics. Very highly recommened.

Open arena

a free version of Q3. Functionaly identical to the original, but with new (free) graphics. Can also run Q3 mods.

Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory

The multiplayer component of W:ET was release for free. Its WW2 FPS, well worth it. Especially good with big (40 player) games.

warsow

A hugely modified version of the quake 1 engine, has gorgeous cell shaded graphics. Highly recommended.

sauerbraten

Based on the Cube engine, has amazing graphics, but sadly the gameplay is a tad lacking. Good for showing off how good an open source game can look if you have the graphics card for it.

A remake of the awesome Total annihilation. Never before have I seen so much mechanical carnage as this game...highly recommended

warzone 2100

an open source remake of warzone 2100. Has no base building, so games are pretty quick.

freespace

Semi realistic space combat.

Semi realistic space combat, based on the freespace engine, but in the Battlestar Galactica universe
