a-squared, originally called "a-squared and jeff", was established by Alex Stanley, Alex Charrett and Jeff Powell in 1997 who found themselves in a pub in Pinner, North London. At the bar stood some bloke clutching a "build yourself a website" book.

One of us approached the bloke who quickly downed his pint (can't think why), handed over a card and left. It was only once the bloke had left the pub that the founding members realised he thought they were already in business - at this point "a-squared and jeff" was born. The a-squared part of the name came from both Alex Stanley and Alex Charrett having the same first name.

Having dropped the "and jeff" part of the title fairly quickly, a-squared went on to be a successful consultancy, web design and IT Support company for a number of years with an annual turnover of over £100k.

The experience gained by running a-squared helped spawn several other business ideas, such as Onlinehelp, Bristol Music Project, and later Scarytan.

Because of several stupid mistakes made by one of the directors (ahem), a-squared was forced to close its doors in 2003 but survived as a trading name in different ventures, most recently the newly formed Severn Digital Ltd.

a-squared provides the hosting for Flux BBS.
